Why i Choose Xavier Friday, Dec 12 2008

The reason i choose Xavier University wasn’t based on my decision to be honest. In my last year of high school i really didnt everything that i was suppose to so therefore my grades went down.  I really never understood how important it was to do good in your last year of high school.  I started to fill out my college applications and turn tem in.  When i got my act scores back and realized that i didn’t do so well on them i started to have doubts about even going to anybodies colllege because i got some letters back saying that my math act scores were to low.  I knew that if UCF didnt accept me, I just knew Xavier would’t. So when i seen the letter from Xavier in the mnailbox i wasn’t really to excited about even opening it. I had my mom open it an when she was smiling i already knew that i had gotten in.  I never really expected it in the least but I am happy that i choose to come here because i know that this is the place to help me further my education.  I know that at times I find myself complainin that I don’t want to be here because it can be boring at times but once I really sit down and think about I know that this is the place that is  going to help me find a job once I graduate.

Xavier Community Monday, Dec 8 2008

The department that i belong to at Xavier University is sociology.  I know that the chairperson of the sociology department is Dr. Amy Bellune-Hite.  Dr. HIte teaches a variety of sociology classes that include Intro to Sociology and a Race and Gender class.  Another professor in the sociology department is Dr. Faircloth. Dr. Faircloth is also my advisor.  He aslo teaches an Intro to Sociology class and he also teaches a Deviance class.  My department does’nt have many professors but it is a close related department.

My favorite subject right now in college is English.  The reason English is my favorite subject is because i enjoy writing and reading papers on certain topics that entertain me.  English is the subject that I feel is going well for me right now.  I  found myself  time thinking that I might want to change my major from sociology to English but I always find myself saying that no let it just be my favorite subject.  I also think that I am getting used to learningaboutmy major, sociology.  When I first started my class Intro to Sociology I was confused with everything that my professor was teaching me.  I mean it took alot of time for me to understand exactly what she was trying to tell us.  The problem subject for me this year came to a surprise because i really didnt think that i would do bad in it.  For my first semester in college history was the subject that gave me the most trouble.  This year history was challenging for me because it was a part of history that i never learned and it was just complicated the first go round.  I wasnt doing so well in that class that i had to drop that history class and register to take it next semester.  I feel that the next time i take history class that i will be more prepared to take inthe information that my teacher is telling me andbe better at taking notes and study notes more carefully.

Local Culture Monday, Dec 8 2008

Being a native of new orleans i know of my surroundings somewhat well.  Me and my family have moved almost all over the city and i was able to meet alot of new people and make friends.  When i look at around the different neighborhoods of New Orleans i recognize the difference between the two different types of buildings and organizations that are around.   In some areas there are buildings that are nice but also in some areas there are buildings that i think need to be torn down.  Fast food restaurants such as: McDonalds and Burger King are all over the place you can catch those type of places in bad areas and also in some good.  I feel that people look at some richer neighborhoods and think that only white people stay there but inactuality there is a a combination you have whites and blacks that stay in such neighborhoods and vice versa for the area that they call “the hood”.  I learn something new everyday when Im in the city of New Orleans it jsut depends on what type ofthings you already know aobut the city.

In the Times Picayunne there seems to be one main thing New Orleans focuses on.  The thing they focus on the most  is the violence and criminal acts committed.  but since there is an election the paper  have been mixed with both crime and election headlines.  I like to read the paper to catch the little details about something big that I heard either on the radio or heard about it from somewhere.  The newspaper doesn’t reall change up with they print out.  When I look at the paper it usually have a murder or kidnapping case as the headline.  The paper may sometimes have a happy moment in it around holiday seasons.  The newspaper is here to inform us but sdometimes I feel that they are only putting bad things  in it to make a certain social class look bad.  Personally  I think that people in New Orleans dont care about anything that they should be most worried about like gas prices or anything like that.  One thing that i have learned about most newspapers or most local news channels is that they like to exaggerate a story to make it sound like it more dramactic than what itreally is so that people can tune in to the station.  In the newspaper they might mix up stories or something that somebody has said as a witness.  The news sometimes can be deceiving to listen to in order to hear if something happen.

Challenges of Xavier Monday, Dec 8 2008

Being that it is my first year in college i think that there will be alot of challenges I wolud have to face being a freshman.  i would face challenges like keeping up with grades and still trying to have a social life.  I also think getting used to all the differences between high school assignments and college students is going to be a tough time.  I know that being faced with per pressure is going to come in time.  Going to college ans trying to have a job is going to be rough, but at the sametime you need money to get groceries  if you stay on campus.  I also know that another challenge will be sharing a room with a random person and trying to mix different personalities together. I feel that another challenge that i find most freshman will be find difficult will be learning to talk to their professors if they need help in class or if they suddenl realize that they have fallin behind in class.  I do believe that many freshman will overcome these different challenges once they have been school for at least one semester.

Treme Monday, Dec 8 2008

Out of all the documentaries about New Orleans, I found this one more interesting. It gave all the culture; from when the highway was built, all the way to when Katrina hit. It was interesting to see the perspective of so many people and it was amazing how these people are so into their city. I love the city of Memphis, but it is nothing compare to the love native new orleneans have for the city. It great to see these people in the movie trying to put the city back together, and how it is educating people on how the city and how it first came about. I loved the people who were dressed in the old fashioned clothes and went around talking to the younger children. I like how they are still keeping the “old” New Orleans alive.

Newspapers Monday, Dec 8 2008

I just want to start off by saying, I hate reading the newspaper; i’d much rather just surf the internet! LOL In news papers, they only seem to show the bad things, or what celebrities have done. WHen I look in the newspaper, I don’t just wasnt to know how there was a shooting way over on the other side of town every single day, give me something a little more lightening like how a poor family went from notbing to something, or how a man has now become a father; things like this, I want to see on the fornt page. Poeple do care about their neighboehoods and they do want to know about the crime, but they also would like to know what the police are doing or what prevenative measures are being done to avoid the situation. I see that the news olny reports what is going on in lower class, bad neighborhoods; places where crime is an every day thing.s

Tom Piazza and the ELECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!! Monday, Dec 8 2008

I had the opportunity to see the aurthor of Why New Orleans Matters, and I found him very interesting.  He seemed very open to the questions, but when a girl kept badgering him and tellin her feelings of the book, he seemed to becomed troubled. One of the girls felt that Piazza didn’t do as much justice to the city of New Orleans, and I can understand where she was coming from. As the night progressed, it started to get a little boring. Not to say he wasn’t interesting, because he really was, but it was as if he started getting tired of the bad rewiews, and so did some of us.

The election was one of the most AMAZING things ever!!!!!!!!! I had such a great time voting. I got up at 4 IN THE MORNING, and was out in the front of the line by 4:30am. One thing that made me a little mad was how some people, older people, tried to skip the line. I understand that the older people go first, but they weren’t even out there when we were, and some of them were only in their thirties, and forties!!!!!! That isn’t considered old; sixty and older is considered old. But on a lighter note, OBAMA WON and that was the greatest thing ever!!! They said it couldn’t be done,  but Obama has shown them otherwise! I can’t see what else President obama has in store!

New Place, New Friends Monday, Dec 8 2008

Now that I am in a new place, I have to make new friends. I came down here with one friend already, but I like to be around other people, so she isn’t enough! LOL Making friends can be either easy or difficult, or both at the same time. For me, its both easy and difficult. I usually make friends easily when I am back at home because I know my enviroment, but being down here forces you to be shy when you don’t know anyone. I actually made friends when I was down here in the summer. Durong Howard Hughes, I met a few people who I became close friends with, and now we are the best of friends! I usually study with them because they are a very smart bucnh, and if I ever have a problem, or need help with something, I know that I can call on them at anytime of the night for help. I know quite a few people. One reason is because of the summer program, and the second is because I like to make friends with people. Does it count to just know someone by name? Or do you havr to REALLY know them, to consider them as someone you know? Or does it even really matter? I  dont think it  matters because to me, as long as you can put a name with a face, then that’s all you really need to know. I am from the great MEMPHIS TENNESSEE, lol, and I am a whoping 6 HOURS away from home!
